History and Timeline Details for the Sunrise Prairie Regional Trail (SPRT) Extension
In 2020, the Chisago County Board of Commissioners (County Board) authorized submission of grant funding request for the purposes of constructing a 2.8-mile trail extension from the current termination at 410th Street in the City of North Branch, north along the County Road 30 right-of-way corridor, to the intersection of County Road 10 in the City of Harris. Later that year, the Greater Minnesota Regional Parks and Trail Commission recommended a Legacy Grant award, which was then successfully awarded by the State of Minnesota in 2021 and will be fully administered by the Department of Natural Recourses (DNR).
In 2022, the County Board accepted and approved the State of Minnesota Grant Agreement (GMRPTC22-05) authorizing County acceptance and proceeding with a Legacy Awarded Grant. Chisago County retained a Professional & Technical Services Contract with WSB & Associates, Inc. for trail engineering and construction services.
In December of 2022, final trail project plans were completed, and the project was authorized for advertisement for competitive construction bids.
On February 7, 2023, the County received and tabulated nine (9) competitive construction bids and selected Knife River Corporation as the primary contractor to build the trail extension.
Trail construction began in March of 2023 with an anticipated completion date in the fall of 2023.
